OnePlus CEO shares thoughts on folding smartphones
He believes that technology is simply not yet ready
That’s why we probably won’t see a folding OnePlus anytime soon
OnePlus had its special event outside CES 2020, where it featured the Concept One smartphone, with the cameras missing. The Verge managed to seat OnePlus CEO Pete Lau for his podcast, where he ask . What he thought about the recent trend in folding phones. However, Lau’s view was that the company had investigated it, but found that the inconveniences far outweighed the professionals, so it hasn’t followed him. The interview was transcribed by Lau’s interpreter Eric Gass.

OnePlus Foldable Phone

According to some of the excerpts from the interview with Verge, one of the reasons why Lau and his team have not chosen this category of smartphones, is due to the way the current screen folds, which does not leave a very “clean or crunchy” look. He claims this also causes wrinkles and problems on the screen and is not something I would like on a phone branded OnePlus. This sentiment also hints at the fact that we probably won’t see a company folding phone anytime soon, probably not even a concept.

When asked about Motorola’s implementation of the Razr, where the screen moves a little when folded to avoid wrinkles, Lau still did not seem impressed with that. Mention that since the screen is still plastic, it will not have the scratch-resistant or durable properties of real glass.

If you think about it, it makes sense why a company like OnePlus wouldn’t focus on that technology, simply because it’s not mature enough and probably doesn’t want to devote a good portion of its R&D resources to a niche segment. Right now. There is no doubt that folding screens will improve and the costs of making them will eventually decrease, but at this time, it is mainly experimental technology. Giants like Motorola, Samsung and Huawei probably have the budgets to devote time and resources to experimenting with new concepts, but that doesn’t mean everyone can do it.
